A Mighty Fortress
If you've been on Broadway or Washington Streets in Northeast Minneapolis, you've passed the stone church known as St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Built like a castle, it stands as a reminder to our community of the Mighty Fortress that is our God. Our church stands to give God's refuge and peace to all who are wearied by the struggles of life.

But don't let that fortress-like appearance fool you. We reach out in the peace and safety that our Lord provides. Our doors are open over 110 days a year, inviting all to worship the God who has spent his greatest treasure, his only Son, to rescue and reclaim us from our hopeless wandering.

St. John's, associated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), is a Bible-based church located in the melting pot of Northeast Minneapolis. St. John's is a multi-ethnic congregation with a strong commitment to urban ministry.

What we believe

A Solid Foundation for Your Children

St. John's is committed to providing a foundation and direction for children in helping them to grow up to be all that God has created them to be. For over 135 years, St. John's has shared God's blessings with children through its Sunday School and for 29 years, St. John's operated an elementary school on site. We continue this service to our members and our community by offering Christian education for children from age 3 through 12th grade.

Crosswalk Preschool
We currently operate Crosswalk Preschool on our site, with weekday classes for 3- and 4-year-olds. Applications are always welcome!

Pilgrim Elementary School
We also currently partner with Pilgrim Lutheran Elementary School in a Christian elementary school that reaches out to children and their families across the entire Minneapolis central city.

This school is staffed by certified teachers who offer students in kindergarten through eighth grade a quality education based on the truths of God's Word.

St. Croix Lutheran High School
And for those in grades nine through twelve, we participate in St. Croix Lutheran High School, offering reduced tuition to a quality school with strong moral values as well as outstanding academic achievement.
